Manuscript Critiques

I offer three types of services, the first-page critique, the 50 page critique, and a full manuscript critique. I am of most use to you when I’m in my wheelhouse, mystery and science fiction. Send me your bone-chilling whodunits and your mind-bending sci-fi!

FIRST PAGE CRITIQUE

The first page, the door to the world of your novel. Readers make snap decisions, whether on their feet in a bookstore or via Amazon’s Look Inside feature on their tablet/Kindle. The opening sentence serves to grab their attention — or, if you’re in the querying stage, that of an agent — and the sentences that follow must do their part to keep that attention and pull the reader into the world you’ve created.

the door to the world of your novel

A first-page critique ($50) addresses common issues such as too little information, too much information, POV confusion, and lack of what readers and agents are looking for — voice and a sense of urgency to the story.

Send me up to 1250 words (about five pages) and a brief description of your project.

What you get:

  • your page(s) marked up via Track Changes in Microsoft Word with any weaknesses identified
  • an accompanying letter summarizing my thoughts and suggestions for improvement.

This type of critique does not address grammar, copy-edit, or proofreading issues, only content.

Turnaround time: usually 2 weeks.

FIFTY PAGES

Maybe you’re unsure if you’ve started the story in the right place, or have a nagging sense that something isn’t working quite right in the early chapters. Or you’ve polished your manuscript and are ready to query agents and want to ensure that your first fifty pages — about 3 chapters, known as a partial — are where they need to be.

the partial

The fifty-page critique ($250 for up to 12,500 words) addresses some of the same issues as the first-page critique, only on a larger scale: flow, pacing, voice, POV confusion, a sense of urgency to the story.

What you get:

  • the first 50 pages of your manuscript marked up via Track Changes in Microsoft Word with any weaknesses identified
  • an accompanying letter summarizing my thoughts and suggestions for improvement.

This type of critique does not address grammar, copy-edit, or proofreading issues, only content.

Turnaround time: usually 4 weeks.

the whole deal

The whole deal, a book length manuscript critique ($0.015 per word). I will read your manuscript twice, once all the way through without stopping and a second time with an eye out for everything from story structure to pacing issues to character development.

What you get:

  • your manuscript marked up in Microsoft Word with any weaknesses identified
  • a letter summarizing my thoughts and suggestions for improvement
  • an opportunity to discuss the feedback in a one-hour phone call or an email back-and-forth.

This type of critique does not address grammar, copy-edit, or proofreading issues, only content.

Turnaround time: it depends on my schedule, but usually 4 to 8 weeks.
